As her classmates celebrate the end of another strenuous school day and flee the classroom one by one, Mikazuki Yozora stays behind to have a nice, long chat with her best friend. Like any young woman her age, Yozora appreciates the opportunity to share her troubles and victories with another, to speak freely without having to conceal or fake anything. The only problem is, her companion never talks back to her – the only downside to an imaginary friend.

Yozora's solitude is by no means the result of weak presence or character. She has the looks to attract as much attention as she wants to and her grades and sharp wit make her the target of envy of many of her classmates. However, Yozora's foul mouth and absolute lack of delicacy guarantee that nobody can maintain a cordial relationship with her – she bombards those that try with insults biting enough to send them crying into a corner.

When Yozora asks if it is really necessary for everyone to have friends, it is not because she is unable to commit to a healthy relationship herself. It is the honest question of somebody who has been betrayed often enough to lose faith in others. But there are times when Yozora wishes she were proven wrong about the value of friendship and trust, just as she has promises from the past that she still wants to believe in.
